Why Mediate?
At Dahlia Mediation, we help you find a clear direction through family change.
Mediation provides a calm, confidential space to resolve disputes without the stress, cost, and conflict of going to court.
We guide you through difficult conversations, helping you make your own informed decisions about separating, children, finances, and the future so you can move forward with clarity and confidence.
Compared with going to court, mediation is more cost effective, faster, confidential, flexible and future-focused. On average financial and children cases at court can take up to 18-24 months. With mediation it is considerably less time and less cost.
What can we help with:
Money and belongings
Deciding who gets what in the separation. Family home, savings, pensions, debt, child maintenance. To name a few.
Deciding where children live.
Deciding where the children live and what arrangements there will be for spending time with both parents. This may mean a discussion the child/children. Decisions made around weekly, holidays, special occasions.
Other family disagreements
Any other disputes to consider sometimes with other family members such as grandparents.

What is Family Mediation ?
Family mediation is a voluntary process which allows separating or divorced couples to sit in a safe, controlled and professional environment to have constructive discussions. With Dahlia Mediation you can be assured as we navigate you through tough decisions to make arrangements for your future life. While mediation is completely impartial you might be asked to consider some options a court would look at. We are not here to make the decisions for you.
Mediation services
When family relationships change, it can feel uncertain and overwhelming. At Dahlia Mediation, we help you find a clear direction—supporting you to navigate difficult conversations and move forward with confidence, without the stress and expense of going to court.
A Better Way to Resolve Disputes
Mediation focuses on cooperation rather than conflict. We support you with impartial mediation, so you can have open, structured conversations that help you reach fair and workable agreements.
Less Stress, More Control
Unlike court proceedings, mediation puts you in control. Decisions are made by you—not imposed by a judge—helping create outcomes that genuinely suit your family’s needs.
Faster and More Cost-Effective
Mediation is often quicker and more affordable than legal action, allowing you to move forward without prolonged uncertainty or escalating costs.
Confidential and Supportive
Everything we discuss in mediation is private. It provides a safe, respectful space where both parties can be heard and understood.
Focused on the Future
Mediation helps you move beyond conflict and focus on practical solutions—whether that involves parenting arrangements, finances, or communication going forward.
Child-Focused Approach
Where children are involved, mediation prioritises their wellbeing. It supports parents in creating stable, positive arrangements that work in the best interests of the child.
Take the First Step
Mediation can help you find clarity, reduce conflict, and move forward with confidence.
Mediation Process
1. Initial Assessment Meeting (Sometimes known as a MIAM) appointment
This is a solo meeting with the mediator who explains the process and determines suitability.
2. Joint mediation sessions
If both parties agree to proceed, a session is scheduled. The session can be focused on financial matters, arrangements for children or both.
3. Information and disclosure
Each party provides financial documentation and their desired outcomes. This is only for financial documents.
4. The sessions
The mediator facilitates the conversation to find agreed solutions.
5. Written Agreement
The mediator may prepare a summary of proposals. This can be turned into a legally binding order. This is where you instruct your solicitor to turn the agreements into a legally binding order.
Location & Format
Mediation can take place face to face (Essex) or online. Mediation is voluntary. If one party refuses then it cannot take place.
Important factors
Mediation is your choice. You do not have to do it if you do not want to. You can stop at any time. You are in control. You and the other person decide on the outcome, not the mediator. The Mediator is there to help facilitate discussions and work through different options with you. Help with costs may be available with legal aid or the Government Family Mediation Voucher scheme.
We cannot mediate
Initial Assessment Meetings
We would need to assess suitability in domestic abuse cases. We need to make sure mediation is safe and whether anyone is at risk of harm. This includes yourself and the children.
An initial assessment (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting) is an individual meeting with a mediator to discuss your circumstances, understand the mediation process, and assess whether mediation is suitable for helping you resolve family issues in a constructive and cost-effective way.
Mediation normally takes 2-3 sessions each lasting 60-90 minutes. During the session your former partner / spouse and you will be asked to explore all the options to help you resolve the issues in your case. Mediation is not a substitute for legal advice, and you are encouraged to have some independent legal advice to help you consider your options.
Mediation is confidential. Discussions in mediation can not be disclosed to the courts. It is without prejudice.
